The <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I> arrives at the planet Janus VI, site of a mining operation for the rare mineral, pergium. Captain Kirk beams down with a landing party to investigate reports of an unknown monster roaming the tunnels; the creature has been killing miners, destroying machinery, and is able to burrow its way through solid rock. But when a vital reactor pump mysteriously disappears, causing the colony’s life support to begin to break down, Spock surmises that this act of sabotage indicates that the creature they are dealing with is an intelligent life-form, and not the miondless monster that they initially believed it to be. Captain Kirk, Lieutenant Commander Spock and several members of the ship's security team mount a search of the mines in an attempt to locate the creature; they soon find a large, rock-like life-form which burrows through the rock walls with ease. After the creature is wounded from a phaser blast, it manages to escape by tunnelling through the tunnel wall. Kirk and Spock give chase, only to be trapped by the creature. But when the creature fails to attack them, Spock decides to attempt a dangerous Vulcan mind-meld so that he can discover the real reason behind the silicon-based life-form’s actions…
